Born in Australia, Lawrence (Laurie) Carroll has spent a lifetime going beyond his own inner and outer limits to achieve remarkable results. For three decades, Lawrence has endeavored to share the simple but profound principles he uses with others. Informed by his varied and rich background of experience, unique skills, philosophical perspective and down-to-earth qualities, he has helped people achieve their goals and dreams.
After earning his Mathematics degree, Lawrence began teaching high school at Oak Flats, on the south coast of New South Wales. He continues to receive correspondence from students he taught in the early 1980’s, who remember him as a dedicated and inspiring presence in their lives. In addition to teaching, Lawrence coached basketball, led the school surfing program, instituted training programs for first aid and lifesaving, as well as organizing fund raising events and end-of-year activities. He co-founded and was National President of the Australian School Surfing Association, a nation-wide organization that established consistent safety standards, instruction, and certification for the sport of surfing so it could be officially taught in the Australian school system.
After teaching for ten years Lawrence’s wife, whom he deeply loved, died of a brain tumor. This threw him into a deep depression and at the same time ignited an insatiable yearning to make sense out of his life. He quit his teaching job and began traveling the world, meeting a vast spectrum of people, from renowned surfers and scuba divers, to beggars in India, from famous actors and performers, to enlightened spiritual teachers. Everyone's story fascinated him and he learned the secrets of how dynamic and powerful the human spirit is in its ability to triumph over any obstacle. He diligently studied various philosophies and spiritual teachings, refining his meditation skills and engaging in physical endurance training that often awed his teachers, friends and family.
Lawrence has become known throughout the Berkshires for inspiring people to surpass their physical and psychological limitations. In 2005 and 2006, he organized two fund-raising, community-wide ultra-marathons—The Beyond Limits Runs. In each of these amazing events, he ran 100 miles without sleep in 24 hours and 30 hours respectively. The Beyond Limits runs took place on the historic Foxhollow property in Lenox. Dozens of people from throughout the community—age 5 to 65—joined in, running varying distances. Many far surpassed their limitations, running 5, 10, 25 and even 50 miles. These extraordinary events raised more than $15,000 for non-profit organizations in the local area — such as the Railroad Street Youth Project in Great Barrington, whose teenage members joined the run and EnlightenNext who hosted the run.
Lawrence currently teaches math at Taconic High School. He says his real work is to help students gain self respect and develop integrity and care for others no matter how challenged they are. He does this through a unique approach that incorporates his own CORE methodology, meditation and physical strengthening exercises. These skills have made it possible for students to develop powerful learning techniques, often transforming years of poor study habits within weeks.
Lawrence also shares this methodology with adults through his coaching programs on physical, mental and emotional pathways to go beyond perceived limits.
Lawrence currently lives in the beautiful Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, where he is happily married to renowned journalist, lecturer and musician, Jessica Roemischer.
